아연 양극 안정화로 아연 성능 향상

포스텍 신소재과학부 화학과 박수진, 송규진 교수와 박사과정 이상엽이 안정적인 수용성 아연이온을 만들었다.

포스텍 신소재공학부 ​​이상엽 화학과 박수진·송규진 교수팀이 물을 전해질로 사용하는 안정적인 수계 아연이온전지를 개발했다. 연구팀은 전극 부식을 방지하고 아연 양극의 안정성을 높이기 위해 보호 폴리머층을 사용했다. 이는 이후 수성 아연 이온 배터리의 전기화학적 안정성을 향상시켰습니다.

'내구성 아연 금속 양극을 위한 이온 선택성 및 화학적 보호성 탄성 블록 공중합체 계면'이라는 제목의 이 연구는 Cell Reports Physical Science에 게재되었습니다.

리튬 이온 배터리는 제조업체가 선택하는 주요 기술로 휴대폰 및 노트북에 사용되며 전기 자동차 및 재생 에너지와 같은 청정 에너지 기술에 사용되는 중요성이 커지고 있습니다. 이 배터리는 가볍고 고용량이므로 다양한 응용 분야에 유리합니다.

그러나 기존 리튬이온 배터리에는 사용된 유기전해질이 인화성이 높아 치명적인 화재나 폭발로 이어질 수 있어 안전 문제가 있다. 리튬이온 배터리는 일상생활에서 널리 사용되고 있는 만큼 중요한 배터리이기 때문에 이러한 사고는 사용자에게 직접적인 피해를 줄 수 있습니다. 이는 보다 안전한 배터리 기술에 대한 요구로 이어졌습니다.

가연성 유기용매 기반 전해질의 문제를 극복하기 위해 수성 전해질 배터리가 잠재적인 대체품으로 개발되고 있습니다. 이 배터리는 본질적으로 안전하고 이온 전도성이 높으며 경제적 이점을 제공합니다.

아연 이온 배터리는 리튬 이온 배터리의 안전성 문제를 극복할 수 있지만 아연 양극은 수성 전해질에서 가역성이 떨어집니다. 이는 아연 수지상 결정과 표면 반응으로 인해 발생하므로 아연 이온 배터리를 사용할 수 없습니다.

포스텍 연구팀은 아연이온전지의 성능 향상을 위해 블록공중합체를 이용해 다기능 보호층이 코팅된 아연 양극을 개발했다. 배터리 충전 및 방전 중에 새로운 폴리머 층은 탄성으로 인해 부피 팽창을 견딜 수 있습니다.

연구진은 폴리머 보호층을 사용함으로써 아연 양극 수명도 증가했는데, 이는 연구원들이 균질화된 이온 분포를 유도하고 수지상 돌기 성장을 억제한다는 것을 발견했기 때문입니다. 전극 표면 전해질의 불필요한 화학적, 전기화학적 반응을 박막층으로 억제해 전극 안정성도 향상됐다.

연구진은 비행시간차이온질량분석기(TOF-SIMS) 분석을 이용해 코팅층 내 아연 이온의 움직임도 규명했다. 아연 이온 움직임의 성공적인 이미징은 배터리 양극의 표면 특성에 대한 추가 연구를 약속합니다.
